The traditional subjects of the B.C. curriculum are enriched by
being taught in a holistic context that makes all learning experiences
more meaningful and relevant. Central to all school activity is
a precise educational framework devised by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi,
a world renowned scientist, scholar and educator. Maharishi’s
ideal system of education is based on an observation from physics,
that all creation comes from a unified field of pure intelligence.
Arising from this field of pure intelligence are laws of nature
governing every aspect of the universe from the tiniest particle
to the whole cosmos. Laws such as ‘Every action has a reaction.’
and ‘The nature of life is to grow.’ provide a straightforward
and simple means to explore and understand the natural world and
all school disciplines. Students see that these same laws of nature
are also operating within themselves.
Special Daily Routines Enhance Readiness to Learn
We begin each day with a series of yoga stretches, called Sun
Salutations, to center the body and the mind for a day of active
learning. This is followed by a five minute walking meditation for
younger students while older students enjoy ten minutes of sitting
meditation. Students then recite in Sanskrit, one of the world’s
oldest languages. These routines help to establish orderliness in
brain functioning and physiology, thereby enabling the students
to be at their best during the day.
French for All Students
We teach French as a second language to all students from kindergarten
to grade 5.
Frequent Field Trips
Because we are a small school, we enjoy frequent field trips throughout
the year. Many of our field trips, including forest hikes and beach
studies, focus on appreciation and understanding of nature. We participate
in all relevant CRD Parks programs and Royal BC Museum programs
which are always excellent learning experiences. We enjoy cultural
events whenever they are available, such as the Naden Band Christmas
Concert and plays by the Touring Players Theatre Company. We also
make use of community facilities such as the libraries, The Bug
Zoo, Butterfly World and local art galleries to support our curriculum
activities.
Science and Studies
In science and social studies, the focus is hands-on, experiential
learning. Our multi-age classrooms give ample opportunity for students
to learn from each other as they present their research projects.
Fieldtrips and visits by multicultural educators and scientists
extend the classroom into the community and the natural environment.
Our Sports Program
The mild Victoria weather enables us to enjoy outdoor physical
education activities for most of the year. These include soccer,
basketball, volleyball, hockey and a variety of other age-appropriate
tag and ball games as well as fitness activities such as skipping
and jogging. During the winter months, we rent a local gym for a
noon hour sports program twice a week. We also make use of community
facilities for gymnastics, swimming, and skating.
The Fine Arts Highlight the Wholistic Development of Each Student
The Fine Arts play a very important part in our curriculum. Because,
as scientific research shows, daily meditation results in increased
creativity and refinement of the senses, we find our students have
a natural affinity for the arts. Clear thinking and self confidence
enable freedom of artistic expression. Art is frequently used to
visually express the knowledge they learn in other disciplines.
Students explore a wide variety of media in the visual arts and
participate in the Independent Schools Art Show. Music classes include
singing and percussion work and recorder for the older students.
Guest artists and musicians enrich the regular curriculum.
